Condition of marine resources in Indonesia

Indonesia is an archipelago state which has a lot of marine sources in the world. Indonesia has been known as a maritime country in the form of an archipelago flanked by two oceans, namely the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. This makes Indonesia rich in various marine life, especially benefiting from its position on the equator. However, along with the exploitation of marine resources and high levels of pollution, it seems that checks are needed to determine the exact condition of Indonesia's marine ecosystem at this time. So that's how the Indonesian Institute Of Science (LIPI) as a scientific authority institution conduct research on the oceans as a long-term conservation effort.

One of them is monitoring the condition of coral reefs. Based on a study that has been conducted about 7.1 hectares of coral reefs have been monitored, but the results are not very good. Only the waters in the Papua and Wakatobi regions are in healthy condition. The rest is not very good, with moderate to large damage levels. It is planned that the coastal ecosystem health index for mangroves and seagrass will also be determined. LIPI also conducts research and cultivation of marine life, including for 10 species of sharks, dragonflies, napoleon fish, and sea cucumbers. These species are currently under threat due to overexploitation. There are many irresponsible individuals who freely exploit marine resources illegally and use illegal means such as trawlers, bombs, etc. only for their personal benefit. Some of them are even carried out by people who come from outside Indonesia. if this continues, it will make marine wealth in Indonesia disappear

And Also, other research focuses are related to waste, plastics, and bioremediation. Indonesia is listed as the second-highest producer of plastic waste after China. Based on the results of research conducted by LIPI in 18 points spread across Indonesia, there are around 468-594 thousand tons of plastic waste produced per year. Most of the waste is stranded and polluting coastal areas. To study the ecological and economic impacts, LIPI is currently formulating the formulation of Indonesia's biodiversity wealth from a material perspective. It is hoped that this can become a common reference for researchers and policymakers to know with certainty the material, economic, and ecosystem service values that these biotas produce.

So there are several things that can be done to maintain marine quality:

1.Do not throw garbage in the sea

2.Do not catch fish with destructive tools

3.Always maintain the cleanliness and integrity of marine life
